Roleys Awards
Many years ago, when Roley was doing her apprenticeship (1990-1994), she entered into the National Jewellery awards of the time.
Her (1992) entry in the Johnson Matthey Jewellery Awards won 1st prize in the First Year Apprentice section. This reticulated sterling silver free-form necklace with chain mail links, (now framed and wall mounted in store) is a great reminder of her humble beginnings, and although it has not, or ever will be, for sale, it was her first real 'piece' and still remains one of her favourites. In 1993 she was awarded 2nd prize in the Second Year Apprentice section. The requirement was to design and make a brooch..and so she did, but then, as she is wont to do, she felt the need to design a matching necklace..which became the prize winner. This piece can be seen in the Trade magazine 'Jewellery Time' Issue 13, Febuary 1994. In 2006, Roleys entry into the New Zealand National Jewellery Show Awards in Wellington, was a stunning pair of onyx and diamond cufflinks, set in 18ct white and yellow gold. Despite the 30 other entries, all of which were for sale, only 1 item was sold during the course of the show...the cufflinks obviously struck a chord with one happy customer as they were purchased 20 minutes into the show opening. Although Roley went home without winning any prizes, she did go home with the knowledge that her work was admired and appreciated. And that is an award no matter how you look at it. |
